He arrived in 1995 with Brown Sugar — a record that sounded like Al Green's ghost was haunting a hip-hop studio — and followed it with Voodoo (2000), one of the most obsessively constructed albums in Black music history. D'Angelo and J Dilla were spiritual and aesthetic kin — both men were obsessed with making music feel alive and imperfect, with the deliberate humanization of digital tools, with the idea that the best music sounds like it's thinking while it plays. Voodoo was built around Questlove's deliberately behind-the-beat drumming, a direct parallel to Dilla's off-grid MPC programming, and the two men's proximity in the Soulquarians collective was no accident.
